about

I started making mosaics about 5 years ago.
It all started with a segment I saw on a show that showcased crafters and their projects.
The lady on the show was smashing up tiles in a pillowcase, and applying them with glue to the top of a table,
I don’t know why but I knew this was something I wanted to try, and since finishing my first tabletop, I haven’t looked back.

I am absolutely captivated by this art form.
I love everything about it, the history, the process, the outcome and mostly, the endless possibilities.
To me, art has become an outlet, an expression of my experience.
I think that ultimately there is a moment, a feeling that artists experience,
that space where it feels just right, the art is right, the pace, the results, are all in line, and it is euphoric, it’s the thing that makes us make art – it’s a journey, and that moment is the destination. It is my constant motivation for making art, and when it happens, I know, for sure, that I am an artist.

Mosaic is timeless as an art form and has been around for over 5000 years. The commitment it takes to take on such a time consuming endeavor is a testament to the addictive nature of mosaic, and I think, the reason that it has stood the test of time. Even the simplest design can take hours and hours to execute, from design, to colour composition, to placement and finally grouting, even the smallest projects literally take days to complete. It takes patience and commitment and faith to be a mosaic artist – you have to trust that you have made the right decisions along the way and that the outcome will be what you envisioned – sometimes it’s not, and sometimes, it’s better.

The potential lifespan of my work is exciting, the durability of glass and cement makes it possible for my art to quite likely outlive me in good form for decades, maybe centuries, as it has in places like Italy and Greece. It leaves a small imprint that represents this time, and my experience in it.

I never expected to be an artist, it just kind of happened to me – and it has quite literally changed my life. Finding art has given me contentment, as though I have finally found what I had unknowingly been searching for, and I know, one way or another, I will be making art for the rest of my days.
